The Centre for Development Policy and Practice (CDPP) invites you to a research talk by Anandini Gupta, Research Fellow at CDPP, examining the complex relationship between women's literacy and labour-force participation.
The study investigates why improvements in female literacy do not necessarily translate into greater participation in paid work. It explores the structural constraints that persist across different policy contexts and traces their roots to historical and political settlements dating back to the colonial era.
Reconceptualising literacy as a “grey asset,” the study highlights how the opportunities available to women and the value they attach to different forms of work shape the benefits of education. It calls for a shift in policy thinking—from expanding capabilities alone to strengthening women's agency and their ability to access meaningful opportunities.
